Exploristers

This 11-day expedition is a masterclass in balance, specifically engineered to let your family find its own rhythm. We believe the best memories aren’t rushed, which is why this journey pairs the “heartwarming sight” of gentle giants with the unhurried exploration of ancient rock fortresses. From the cool tea country to the golden southern sands, every day is a “soft landing” designed to help you shed the weight of travel and sink into the authentic soul of the island together.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 01

Warm welcome at Bandaranaike International Airport / Short drive to Negombo / Relax after your flight by the beach or hotel pool / Overnight in Negombo

Your adventure begins with a friendly smile the moment you land, followed by a short, breezy drive to the coastal charm of Negombo. We believe the first day should be about shedding the weight of travel, so we invite you to simply sink into the sand or lounge by the pool. It’s a soft landing designed to let your family find their feet and prepare for the magic ahead at your own pace.

Day 02

Visit Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage (elephant feeding + bathing) / Continue to Sigiriya (Cultural Triangle) / Evening climb Pidurangala to witness the Sunset / Overnight in Sigiriya.

Start your morning with the heartwarming sight of gentle giants at the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, where watching them bathe in the river is a memory that stays with you. As we move into the Cultural Triangle, the day ends with a steady, rewarding climb up Pidurangala Rock. Standing at the summit as the sun paints the sky in gold, you’ll get your first breathtaking view of the Sigiriya lion rock across the horizon.

Day 03

Early climb to Sigiriya Rock Fortress / Afternoon bullock cart ride or catamaran ride + village lunch / Overnight in Sigiriya (Optional: Ayurvedic head massage)

Beat the morning heat with an early ascent of the legendary Sigiriya Rock Fortress, standing where ancient kings once looked over their vast gardens. Your afternoon shifts into a slower gear with a traditional bullock cart ride or a peaceful catamaran trip across a lotus-filled lake, topped off with an authentic village lunch. To end the day, perhaps treat yourself to a soothing Ayurvedic head massage to melt away the day’s effort.

Day 04

Short visit to Dambulla Cave Temple (colourful Buddha statues, manageable walk) / Stop at spice garden in Matale / Evening Kandyan dance performance / Overnight in Kandy

Explore the quiet, spiritual stillness of the Dambulla Cave Temple, where vibrant statues and murals have kept watch for centuries. After a fragrant pause at a Matale spice garden to discover the secrets of Ceylon cinnamon, we head into the hills of Kandy. Your evening is filled with the rhythmic pulse of traditional drums and the vibrant colours of a classic Kandyan dance performance.

Day 05

Visit Peradeniya Botanical Gardens / Walk around Kandy Lake / Short visit to Temple of the Tooth / Overnight in Kandy

Spend a peaceful morning wandering through the towering bamboo groves and giant Javan fig trees of the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens. Later, enjoy a quiet, unhurried stroll around the iconic Kandy Lake before visiting the Temple of the Tooth Relic, the island’s most sacred site. It is a day designed for reflection and beauty, allowing you to truly feel the spiritual heartbeat of the hill capital.

Day 06

Scenic train ride from Kandy to Nanu Oya / Visit a tea factory / Explore Gregory Lake / Overnight in Nuwara Eliya

Board the famous blue train for a journey that feels like travelling through a living painting of mist and emerald tea estates. Upon reaching the cool heights of Nuwara Eliya, you’ll visit a local tea factory to see how the world’s finest brew is made, right from the leaf. The day winds down with a relaxed walk by the breezy shores of Gregory Lake, surrounded by the “Little England” charm of the highlands.

Day 07

Drive to Ella / Visit Nine Arch Bridge and Little Adam’s Peak (easy hike) / Relax at a lodge with mountain views / Overnight in Ella.

Heading deeper into the mountains, we visit the architectural wonder of the Nine Arch Bridge, hidden amidst lush jungle and tea bushes. An easy, family-friendly hike up Little Adam’s Peak rewards you with panoramic vistas that look like a dream. Your evening is spent in Ella, a laid-back village where you can simply relax at your lodge and watch the clouds drift through the mountain gaps.

Day 08

Scenic drive to Yala / Overnight near Yala National Park

Today, the scenery shifts dramatically as we descend from the misty peaks toward the sun-drenched southern plains. This scenic drive is a journey in itself, watching the landscape transform from tea gardens to untamed scrubland. We settle near Yala National Park, giving you a quiet evening to rest and prepare for the wild encounters waiting for you at dawn.

Day 09

Morning jeep safari (see elephants, buffaloes, crocs, maybe a leopard!) / After lunch, drive to Mirissa Beach / Overnight in Mirissa.

The wild calls early as you head out on a private 4×4 safari through Yala, keeping a keen eye out for the spotted hide of a leopard or the grand silhouette of an elephant. After a thrilling morning, we leave the jungle behind for the rhythmic lull of the southern coast. By evening, you’ll be in Mirissa, where the only thing on your schedule is the sound of the Indian Ocean.

Day 10

Chill beach day - Optional: whale watching cruise (Dec–Apr) / Or day trip to Galle Fort (colonial charm, ice cream, lighthouse)/ Overnight in Mirissa

This is your day to simply be. You might choose to head out on a boat for a chance to see the magnificent Blue Whale, or perhaps take a short trip to the historic Galle Fort for a stroll through its cobblestone streets and a scoop of local ice cream. Whether you are exploring the ramparts or lounging on the sand, the focus is on effortless comfort and the joy of the coast.

Day 11

Drive along the scenic southern expressway to the Bandaranaike International airport (Optional short stop at Turtle Hatchery in Kosgoda)

As your adventure draws to a close, we take the smooth southern expressway back toward the airport, reflecting on the memories made. If time allows, a final meaningful stop at a turtle hatchery in Kosgoda offers a beautiful last connection with the island’s nature. We ensure you reach the airport comfortably, leaving you with a heart full of stories and a spirit that feels refreshed.
